Kitsap Humane Society: Helping Thousands of Pets in Need

For over 100 years, the Kitsap Humane Society has helped countless furry friends in need. KHS has been located right here in Silverdale since 1908, and we’re proud supporters of their incredible efforts. Read on to learn about their impact, meaningful programs, and fun events that you can attend.

Helping Thousands of Pets

Over the last decade, KHS has become one of the leading animal welfare organizations in the Pacific Northwest. In 2023 alone, KHS helped more than 4,000 pets find families through their adoption program, and KHS staff provided spay and neuter services to almost 3,500 pets. Through a newer program called Rescue Me, the Kitsap Humane Society helps bring animals from overcrowded shelters in places like Texas, California, and Hawaii to find their forever homes here in Kitsap.

Meet Jocelyn Horton

Jocelyn Horton has been with the Kitsap Humane Society for a little over a year and works as the Events & Outreach Assistant. She is out in the community a lot, representing KHS. We spoke to her about her role and got to know a bit about what goes on behind the scenes. She says she is constantly amazed as a KHS team member. She’s also so grateful for our supportive community.

What about the mission of KHS is most inspiring to you?

As an animal lover, I’m inspired by the Kitsap Humane Society’s commitment to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals in need. The dedication and passion of the staff, volunteers, and foster community are truly remarkable. They work hard to provide a safe and loving environment for every animal that comes through the door.

How did you first get involved, and why?

I have always had a passion for planning events. From birthday parties to weddings, I have loved the challenge of organizing every detail and seeing the end result come together seamlessly. So, when an opportunity became available to combine my passion for event planning with my love for animals in need, I knew I couldn’t pass it up. Being able to raise funds and awareness for a cause that is near and dear to my heart while utilizing my skills and creativity is a dream come true. I love seeing the positive impact these events have on helping animals in need and I am grateful for the opportunity to do what I love while making a difference.

Is there a special memory that comes to mind when you think of your work at KHS?

There are so many special moments like events that came together perfectly and fun times with colleagues. But the special stories always involve the animals. We fall in love with every single one of them. Every now and then, there’s a cat or dog who’s afraid of the other animals, so they live with us in the administrative offices. We love to see them adopted, but we end up missing them too. And then there are the stories that just warm your heart like the three-legged kitten who survived terrible injuries to be adopted by a loving family. The undernourished, stray dog who was adopted by people on a horse farm. There’s an endless string of great stories.

How You Can Support Kitsap Humane Society

Kitsap Humane Society could not have succeeded without help from the community and their volunteer team. The Kitsap Great Give on April 16th is a wonderful way to show support. There are also so many ways to get involved while having fun. You can attend an event that directly supports the shelter, such as Pints for Pets held at local breweries, PetsWALK in Historic Downtown Poulsbo on June 1st, the annual Putting FORE Pets golf tournament, or their two major annual fundraisers: Comedy Unleashed and the Animal Krackers gala. Another great way to get involved is by sponsoring an event. Donations help keep their shelter animals clean, happy, and comfortable. Food to support the Pet Food Pantry is always helpful, too.

Windermere Silverdale’s Involvement

In years past, our office has held food and supply drives for the Kitsap Humane Society. We love to see the KHS folks out in the community. Our local Windermere offices are full of animal lovers. We are proud to say that we have collectively adopted lots of pets from KHS. We look forward to partnering with KHS again in the future for another community service event, fundraiser, or pet food drive, and we hope you will join us. The selflessness and compassion of everyone involved at KHS serve as a reminder that small acts of kindness can really make a difference in the lives of animals.
