Free Mother’s Day Activities & Great Local Gifts

Mother’s Day is coming up on May 11th! What better way to treat the mothers, grandmothers, and motherly figures in your life than to spend some quality time together? We’ve compiled some fun, free activities to make your Mother’s Day special. And, if you need gift ideas, we’ve got you covered. We love supporting local businesses here in Kitsap County, so we’ve also included some thoughtful ideas.
Outdoor Activities
Surprise your mom, stepmother, aunt, or grandmother with a picnic in one of our wonderful local parks. Consider going to Kiwanis Park in Bremerton. It has picnic tables, open fields, a playground, and public restrooms. Or, Seabeck’s Scenic Beach State Park is another great option. It has nice trails with rhododendrons, incredible views of the Olympics, picnic shelters, beach access, and a playground.
Another idea is to head to Kingston’s Saltair Beach, right by the ferry. It offers a nice, sandy beach and it’s steps from downtown. Pack a picnic and some beach towels for a relaxing afternoon. Alternatively, you could purchase delicious empanadas from Argensol or a few slices of award-winning pizza from Sourdough Willy’s. Both establishments are loved by locals and are within walking distance of Saltair Beach. While you’re downtown, you could also check out the Kingston Public Market. Its opening day is on Mother’s Day. The market is located by the ferry terminal in Mike Wallace Park. You’ll find all kinds of locally made crafts, fresh produce, and more. There’s often live music there as well.
If you want to check out a unique local spot, consider visiting the Hobbit House in The Brothers Greenhouses. This iconic tiny house is open year-round during business hours (Monday – Saturday, 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM; Sunday, 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM). Visitors can step into this magical place, take photos, view the rooftop garden, and sign the guestbook. While you’re there, peruse their wonderful selection of locally grown plants – perennials, annuals, vegetables, succulents – you name it, they probably have it.
Not too far from Kitsap County is beautiful Finnriver Farm & Cidery in Chimacum. Finnriver will be having a Makers Market on Saturday, May 10th and Sunday, May 11th from 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM. This event celebrates mothers and mother nature and will include an array of local vendors. All of them are either inspired by nature or use natural materials in their work. Finnriver is fun for the whole family with live music, tasty cider for purchase, an expansive outdoor area for kids to play, and the chance to find a perfect gift to purchase for Mom.
For Fans of the Arts
If the mom in your life enjoys art, spend an afternoon with her at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA). Thanks to donors and members, admission is always free. It’s open 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM, daily. Check out BIMA’s current exhibitions, including “Power of the Presses”, which focuses on print works and includes hands-on art making in the gallery. Also impactful is their permanent art collection, highlighting contemporary art of the Puget Sound region.
Another option is a free Mother’s Day craft hosted by the Suquamish Museum. From May 7 – 11, from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, you can visit the Suquamish Museum to make a beautiful paper flower bouquet (limited to one per person). This event is open to all ages, and supplies will be provided. It’s fun to get crafty while enjoying time together, creating a sweet memory and a bouquet that won’t wilt. The Suquamish Museum is also a beautiful place to immerse yourself in history, art, and culture. The museum admission is free for Tribal members and children 5 and under. For others, prices vary from $6.00 to $8.00 per person; see their website to learn more.
For History Lovers
Full of fascinating artifacts and information, the Puget Sound Navy Museum in Bremerton is free year-round. Visitors can enjoy permanent and temporary exhibits, and a Family Discovery Room geared toward children. It’s open Wednesdays through Mondays from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Please note that if you bring a bag, it needs to be stored in one of their lockers since they want to keep all Navy treasures safe and secure.
Another great option for history lovers in the Kitsap History Museum, also in Bremerton. It’s open 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Tuesday through Sunday. General admission is free to all visitors. They have many interesting exhibits, including store fronts with historical artifacts, a switchboard, a firefighter display, indigenous pieces, and much more. Additionally, the Kitsap History Museum hosts interesting events like their “History Uncorked” series. Follow their Facebook page to stay in the loop.
Local Mother’s Day Gift Ideas
A Glowing Gift
Unique candles always make for an enjoyable gift. The Wax Artist, which you can find in the Kitsap Mall, has all kinds of candles full of personality and charm. The Wax Artist also has highly-rated candle-making workshops. This might even be a fun activity to do with your mom. In one of these workshops, you get to blend your favorite scents and add wax charms to personalize it. This typically takes 30 minutes to one hour. After pouring your candle, it will be ready for pickup in about two hours. While waiting, you can check out other shops inside the mall or get a bite to eat. While the staff is open to walk-in candle-making, it’s best to book online.
Vintage Flair
Another sweet gift is a mix of old and new. Stop into Bremerton Vintage Flea and find a mug or teapot that you can fill with chocolates, IOUs, or little thank you notes. This great shop also has interesting baskets, which you could purchase and fill with bath products, their favorite snacks, or flower seed packets.
Classically Cute
For a classic gift, stop into Williams Flower & Gift store. Not only will you be able to select a beautiful bouquet, but you’ll also find some lovely gift baskets and exotic plants for sale. This store is family-owned and provides local same-day and express flower delivery to Bremerton, Washington and the rest of their local delivery zone.
Fun Flights of Red and White
If the mother you’re treating enjoys a fine wine, consider getting her a Kitsap Wine Pass. This experiential gift is brought to you by the Kitsap Winery Alliance, which is a coalition of seven wineries in Poulsbo, Hansville, and Bainbridge Island. With this pass, Mom will save on wine tasting fees at all participating wineries, receive a wine flight at each one, and get discounts on bottle purchases. It’s good for one year from the date of purchase and the pass can be delivered by email or text message.
Painted Perfection
To create a memorable keepsake for the motherly figure in your life, paint a piece of pottery at Dancing Brush Studio in downtown Poulsbo. From vases to platters, statues to spoon rests, there are no shortage of options. The staff can show you different painting techniques and the studio is open Monday through Thursday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Friday & Saturday from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Sunday from 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM. Plan to be there for at least an hour. Your studio session includes all materials and it’s $15 per person plus the shelf price of whichever pottery piece you select. When you’re done, you’ll pay and the staff will fire it in their kiln. It’s typically ready to pick up one week later.
Book-themed Beauties
Books also make excellent gifts. Ballast Book Co. in Bremerton has all kinds of great reads. Consider making a themed gift by purchasing a book, a clever book bag, and a funny bookmark. Or, combine this succulents adult coloring book, with a succulents informational book, and an actual succulent from Brothers Greenhouses. Other themed gifts include a cookbook paired with the ingredients to make a favorite recipe, or this national parks journal with a bookworm hat.
However you decide to honor the mothers in your life, we hope you celebrate locally here in beautiful Kitsap County!
Haselwood Family YMCA: Fitness, Fun and Philanthropy

The Haselwood Family YMCA in Silverdale offers many fitness and educational opportunities for our local community. Whether in the gym, the pool, or a personal development class, there is something for all ages to enjoy.
Amenities at the Haselwood Family YMCA
There are many amenities directly related to health and fitness. The aquatics center contains a lap pool, activity pool, splash pad, lazy river, and a hot tub. In addition, there are lifeguards posted throughout the pool area for safety. Instructors teach swim lessons and group exercise classes as well.
The gym is another big feature of the YMCA. There is a weightlifting area and track for running laps. Members can hire a personal trainer for specific fitness goals and track their progress on the YMCA mobile app. The group exercise schedule is jam-packed with activities daily. Many use the large open court to play basketball, volleyball, and pickleball. There are also youth sports leagues.
Young children can also enjoy the indoor play structure called the Adventure Zone. The rock wall is another fun feature. If you need to keep your children entertained while you are working out, check out the Child Watch or Teen Center.
Child Watch is meant for children 6 months to 6 years of age. The Teen Center offers games and even homework help. Child Watch has a drop-in or monthly fee, whereas the Teen Center is free.
Check out the video below for a full tour of the facility.
Classes and Activities
Another powerful benefit of the YMCA is the opportunity to take group classes. Group exercise classes are meant for all ages and ability levels. On their app or website, simply check out what they offer and then filter by location. You can also view their upcoming aquatic classes and swim lessons. If you can’t attend in person, try a virtual class through the Virtual Y.
There are also classes focused on personal development. There is a Little Learners program that supports children ages 3 – 5 in a preschool setting. The Youth Leadership Development Club prepares high schoolers for leadership roles in the future.
And, there are classes for adults. For example, Overcoming Financial Burdens will delve into personal finance lessons. All these classes and activities offer ways to get plugged in immediately to the facility. Lastly, keep an eye out for registration dates for art classes and youth sports leagues. Spots for these courses tend to go quickly!
Accessibility for All
If all of this sounds wonderful, but you have concerns about cost, then check out the financial assistance programs offered by the YMCA. You can access scholarships and other financial assistance. You can calculate your estimated rate based on income. Once you have that number, you can apply for scholarships. Additionally, any youth in foster care can receive a free Y membership. Also, there are corporate or military benefits you may be able to utilize.
The Shower Access Program is another powerful accessibility tool at the YMCA. Launched in 2020 during the COVID pandemic, this program has served over 4,000 community members. Those experiencing housing insecurity can enter the facility for free and use the showers for a half hour from 6:00 AM – 8:00 AM, Monday – Friday. Entry is cut off a half hour before the end time.
Donation Drives
The YMCA has a robust non-profit giving program.
You can donate independently, or there is an employer match feature on the YMCA donation site. There is also the option to donate stock options, mutual funds, or even cars. Another special way to give to the YMCA is to donate in the memory of someone.
Additionally, teens are invited to give their time through the Summer of Service program in South Dakota. This annual opportunity involves a select group of teens who spend a week on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Reservation. They work with local children, planning and delivering a week of day camp for the youth in Dupree. You’re also welcome to donate directly to the Summer of Service program.
The Haselwood Family YMCA in Silverdale is a wonderful space for family fun, fitness, and community. If you’d like to learn more about other local resources and upcoming events in the Silverdale area and beyond, check out our Guide to Kitsap County.

13 Things I Wish I Knew Before Moving to Kitsap County

If you’re new to Kitsap County, Washington, you’re probably on the hunt for great local tips, and we’re here to help. We’ve often heard people say they wished they would’ve known about certain places and resources sooner, so let’s make sure that’s not you. We spoke to a mix of locals and newcomers to create this list of tips for life in Kitsap, a beautiful place to live.
1. Umbrellas Aren’t Really a Thing Here
Instead of umbrellas, locals invest in high-quality rain jackets and waterproof boots or shoes. We love supporting local businesses and hope you do too. In Poulsbo, Indigo Plum is a great shop to find quality outdoor clothes for the whole family. Wildernest, in downtown Bainbridge, has a wonderful assortment of outdoor clothing and gear.
2. Don’t Underestimate IPA’s Popularity
The PNW is known for having lots of micro-breweries, but if you haven’t ever been to this area, you may underestimate how popular India Pale Ale (IPA) is. At local breweries like Crane’s Castle, Hood Canal, and Silver City, you’ll find many different varieties of IPA on tap at all times.
3. Coffee is Life
Okay, we realize not everyone loves lattes and such, but coffee shops really are a staple here. Sure, Seattle is known as the Starbucks headquarters, but outside of the city, you’ll find cute little coffee places down side streets and main drags. Some Kitsap favorites include The Coffee Oasis, Pegasus Coffee House, Austin Chase Coffee, Cups Espresso & Cafes, and M&T.
4. A Little Snow is a Big Deal
If snow is in the forecast, be prepared to stock up on essentials. Unlike other parts of the country, the hilly landscapes and many small streets can cause the whole area to be brought to a standstill thanks to a few inches of snow. And, if you’re from a place where winter means frequent blizzards and heavy snowfall, we’re sure you’ll get a kick out of the way some of us act when we have an actual snow day.
5. Outdoor Schools Are On the Rise
Even with the rain and chilly weather, outdoor schools, originally popular in Scandinavia, have gained popularity in Kitsap County. Magnolia Forest Preschool, Barnacles and Bees, and Kitsap Life Academy are some of the local options. So if you’re thinking of moving here, it’s helpful to know about these options in advance.
6. Not All Homes/Areas Have Access to High-Speed Internet
With so many rural areas, fiber-optic cables have not made it to every neighborhood. There are other options available, but for those who are worried about work-from-home life, there are lots of Coworking spaces that serve up WiFi (and coffee).
7. Don’t Put Off Getting a “Good to Go” Pass
Skip the lines on toll roads by purchasing a “Good to Go” pass. It may seem like a simple thing, but doing this now will save you time. You’ll never be stuck in line waiting and wishing you would’ve just gotten a pass sooner. Drivers beware: without the pass, if you go in the “Good to Go” line, they will find you. You’ll get a ticket in the mail, so sign up or stop to pay.
8. Each Area of Kitsap County Really is Unique
Make time while you’re new to the area to really explore each part of Kitsap County. This will help you discover so many great restaurants, boutiques, museums, beaches, and more. Plus, there are many great local events going on that you won’t want to miss out on.
Almost every town has a historic “downtown” area. Sure, there are larger shopping centers with big box stores, but you don’t want to miss the charm of Downtown Bremerton, Historic Downtown Poulsbo, Old Town Silverdale, Downtown Bainbridge, Port Orchard, Kingston, and Suquamish. Smaller seaside gems like Port Gamble, Hansville, and Indianola also have parks, trails, and more to explore.
9. You Don’t Have to Go into the City for Arts & Culture
The Bainbridge Island Art Museum, Bremerton First Friday Art Walk, and Poulsbo’s Second Saturday Art Walk are all wonderful options for multimedia art. There are wonderful live music venues like Bremerton’s Admiral Theater and Suquamish’s Clearwater Casino and Resort. Great, local cultural festivals include Bainbridge’s Mochi Tsuki Festival, Suquamish’s Chief Seattle Days, and Poulsbo’s Nordic Julefest. You’ll also find many options for paint and sip nights, art classes, and performing arts events.
10. Military Discounts Are Prevalent
Kitsap County is home to thousands of military personnel and their families. Many local establishments will offer discounts to military families – from daycares to coffee shops, even if not listed or advertised. So, if this applies to you, don’t forget to ask.
11. Don’t Wait to Discover Our National Parks
The Olympic Peninsula is home to multiple National Parks, and you can visit snow, waterfalls, a rainforest, and natural hot springs all in one day. Just over the Hood Canal Bridge, this is perfect for a day trip adventure or weekend outing. We highly recommend purchasing a Discover Pass and checking out our state park’s free days. Trust us, there are so many beautiful places to explore that you don’t want to end up wishing you would’ve known about a park or trail months ago. And, if you enjoy camping, be prepared to reserve your campsite in advance. Some fill up six months in advance.
12. Sunshine Can Mean Traffic Jams
When the weather is nice, be prepared for traffic jams – and not just on the roads. The Washington State Ferries are one of the coolest parts of living in Kitsap County. But during the summer months, extra traffic from tourists can fill up the boats, causing drivers to wait sometimes two hours. Walk-on passengers can avoid this fate, so if you are able to walk or bike on – DO! Also, if the Hood Canal Bridge opens up for large boats or Navy vessels, drivers sometimes have to wait for 60+ minutes to cross. Download the WSDOT App to get real-time alerts.
13. Don’t Miss the Beauty Nestled in the Trees
When driving from point A to point B, it may seem like you’re just passing through forests, but tucked inside you’ll often find parks, hiking trails, mountain biking trails, beaches, and amazing vistas. Local favorites include Fay Bainbridge Park, Anderson Landing Preserve, Port Gamble Heritage Trails, Fish Park, Buck Lake County Park, Scenic Beach State Park, and Illahee Preserve.

Community Spotlight: Kitsap Sailing Foundation

When visiting the Port of Silverdale, you can often watch local youth learning to sail, thanks to the Kitsap Sailing Foundation. This non-profit’s mission is to teach the art of sailing and rowing to Kitsap’s youth while building leadership, teamwork, and decision-making skills.
“Learning to sail opens up a whole new world. It is a world of almost limitless opportunities for fun, adventure, exploration, and self-achievement,” says Windermere Broker Mark Danielsen, whose kids developed a deep love for sailing. In fact, his son and his niece took lessons and became youth sailing instructors. The foundation has impacted so many kids’ lives, so we’re shining a light on this wonderful organization.
History
In 2006, a group of volunteers formed the Kitsap Sailing and Rowing Foundation to support youth programs in Kitsap County. The foundation’s volunteers assist in running programs, maintaining equipment, and coordinating boat acquisition. The Port of Silverdale and the Kitsap Sailing Foundation (KSF) partnered to continue the program. Clam Island Rowing became its own non-profit as interest in rowing grew. The Kitsap Sailing Foundation continues to provide training, mentorship, and summer camp programs while helping the port acquire new sailboats and equipment and expanding its existing curriculum.

Summer Sailing Camps for Kids and Teens
KSF offers a variety of programs, including summer sailing camps for kids and teens. No prior experience is needed. STEM education has also been incorporated into the sailing curriculum to provide an even more in-depth learning experience. The Youth and Teen Sailing Summer Camps provide an excellent opportunity for youth to learn about marine life in an unrestricted outdoor classroom. While building friendships and learning to work as a team, kids learn about topics like wind power and water quality.
Summer camps are daily and last for one week. They will be offered this summer starting June 21, 2021 and ending August 6, 2021. Youth camps are from 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM while teen camps are from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Five-day camps are $150 per session, and four-day camps are $120 per session.
Impacting Youth in Many Ways
Getting kids and teens involved in outdoor activities can help them in so many ways. They learn to appreciate nature, stay physically active, and participate in experiential learning activities. “One of the things we have learned from the Covid-19 lockdown is how important it is for our youth to be engaging with others and staying active. We are very pleased to be able to offer sailing as an outlet for the youth to be outside, off their screens, and engaging with others,” says John Bouck, President of the Kitsap Sailing Foundation.
“The Kitsap Sailing Foundation high school sailing team program has also been important to the Bremerton Yacht Club,” explains Mark Danielsen. “High school sailors from Silverdale who develop their skills and become certified instructors often teach summer sailing camps at Bremerton Yacht Club as well as the Port of Silverdale.”
These programs can offer long-term benefits as well, sometimes even impacting students’ educational and career trajectories. “My daughter joined the Central Kitsap Sailing Team. She developed new friendships, enjoyed racing with her team throughout the PNW, and became a U.S. Sailing certified instructor,” says Julie Wurden Jablonski, Windermere Broker, and Kitsap Sailing Foundation Treasurer/Board Director. Julie’s daughter has “taught youth camps at the Port of Silverdale and volunteers to help coach the team. Many sailors go on to race in collegiate programs, and some have gone on to sailing and recreation careers.”

Support through Kitsap Great Give or Get Involved
If you’d like to support KSF, it is the perfect time to do so since Kitsap Great Give is going on now through April 20, 2021. Kitsap Great Give celebrates our community’s spirit of generosity, supporting our local nonprofits, like the Kitsap Sailing Foundation. Sponsors boost local donations so your donation could even be doubled. Donate to the Kitsap Sailing Foundation before April 20 to make an even bigger impact.
If you’d like to support the foundation at a different time, you can make a donation on their website. Additionally, businesses can become a sponsor and have their name on the side of a sailboat. For more information, email info@kitsapsailing.org or call (360) 447-8520.
Also, the foundation welcomes community involvement. They seek certified sailing instructors for coaching, boat repair skills, and fundraising event assistance. They are also open to new community members joining their board of directors.

A spectacular botanical garden, the Bloedel Reserve flourishes this time of year. Undoubtedly, the Japanese Garden is a must-see for anyone who wants to experience a tranquil retreat. It has also been named one of the top ten Japanese Gardens in the United States by the Journal of Japanese Gardening. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tickets are released in batches and must be reserved in advance. This botanical gem was created by Dan Hinkley and his husband, architect Robert L. Jones. It spans almost 15 acres of fantastic flora from all over the world. After lying dormant for nearly six years, Heronswood was renewed through the S’Kallam Tribe. They earnestly restored the garden to its former beauty. This spring, they will be dedicating a stumpery, an artistic display of tree stumps, that recounts the history of the S’Klallam Tribe with the local timber industry. Heronswood opens on April 1st and tickets will be $10 for adults, $5 for children (7-17), and ages 6 and younger are free.
Albers Marcovina Vista Gardens – Bremerton

And, fun fact: more tulip and daffodil bulbs are produced there than in any other county in the United States. Designed as a driving tour, these flower fields can be seen anytime during April completely free of charge.
For a more in-depth experience, you can visit Tulip Town every day in April from 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM. Tickets are $10 for ages 12 and up, $5 for ages 6 – 11, and kids 5 and under are free. They offer an indoor/outdoor tulip garden, trolley rides (weather dependent), local goods, treats, and more.
Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden – Federal Way
What better way to appreciate Washington’s state flower than by visiting the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden in Federal Way? Located between Seattle and Tacoma, this 22-acre woodland garden has the largest collection of Rhododendron species in the world. Get a glimpse of what they offer by watching this enticing video from 2019. Peak bloom time is mid-March through mid-May. They’re open Tuesday – Sunday, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Be sure to read their updated policies before visiting. General admission is $8, and it’s $5 for seniors and students, free for military and children under 12.
Seattle Cherry Blossoms and Japanese Cultural Festival

Origami flower. Photo by Andy Ahlstrom.
Every year, this free festival is held at Seattle Center and it combines cultural traditions with various types of entertainment to celebrate Japanese culture. They typically have everything from martial arts demos to Japanese food, traditional music to origami contests. Due to the pandemic, the festival will be happening virtually again this year, from April 9 – 11. Check out videos from last year’s fun virtual event.
Although the University of Washington campus is typically a great place to stroll beneath the blossoming trees, UW is once again asking people to view their beautiful blossoming trees virtually this year due to COVID-19. If you’re in the Seattle area, you can use the Seattle Department of Transportation’s interactive map of trees to see where you can drive to enjoy blossoms. To search for cherry trees in a specific neighborhood, click the tab at the top that’s titled “Explore Street Trees”. Then scroll down on the left-hand side and click on “Trees By Type” to look for trees with the “Prunus” genus to view cherry or plum trees.
